The Faculty of Engineering aims to develop and produce the next generation of accomplished engineers, researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs with strong analytical skills in healthcare industry. It offers a four-year undergraduate degree program in Biomedical engineering recognized by the Pakistan Engineering Council.
Biomedical Engineering is a flagship program, aims to produce engineers having an edge in knowledge and technical skills through enquiry, research and experimentation. The faculty of engineering adapted a globally competitive curriculum incorporating theoretical knowledge with hands-on training and learning using state of the art modern equipment. This allows students to solve complex engineering problems and enable them to enhance their technical skills in healthcare industry, nationally and internationally.
SHU has qualified and experienced faculty to ensure that the program learning outcomes are achieved. Our teaching methodology accentuates on student-teacher interactions for providing optimal learning environment, where strong emphasis is laid on Industry-Academia collaboration for which there is an Industrial Advisory Board that facilitates the development of insights on current trends in healthcare industry by arranging class lectures, seminars, webinars, field visit, and workshops for the students.

Biomedical Engineering (BME) is the fastest growing interdisciplinary engineering program, combining engineering with medicine that provides innovation to enhance the quality of life. It utilizes problem solving skills to design and develop innovative diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical solutions for healthcare industry. The increasing utilization of technology in healthcare, the demand for biomedical engineers has grown worldwide.
Department of Biomedical Engineering (DBME) offers a well-structured four-year undergraduate degree program and has extended its focus on the Outcome Based Education (OBE) system. This will provide students with the core foundation in engineering principles and promotes their skills through device-based learning using state-of-the-art laboratories for improved learning outcomes.
A broad spectrum of technical and professional skills is offered through research and internship opportunities.
DBME focuses on transforming the theoretical concepts into the real world solutions to problems, keeping in mind the current challenges and research in healthcare industry. The department is well-equipped to produce young engineers, scientists and entrepreneurs inculcating self-directed learning traits.
Additionally, DBME has constituted an Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) with representatives from hospitals, research centers, medical-device manufacturing industry and academia.
To be recognized nationally as a quality academic, research- driven, innovative and entrepreneurial education provider advancing knowledge and nurturing talent for the benefit of society and healthcare community.
To provide an optimal learning environment to educate future biomedical engineers utilizing curricula and training opportunities that upskills interpersonal, entrepreneurial and multidisciplinary knowledge to contribute in academia, research centers, healthcare industry and society.
The objectives of the department of biomedical engineering is to deliver quality education by:
Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (B. E.) in Biomedical Engineering
Duration: 4 Years
Credit Hours: 138
Why Biomedical Engineering?
Biomedical Engineering is a popular career choice, as it offers an opportunity to serve people and to participate in the working with living systems. Biomedical Engineers work closely with multidisciplinary engineers, scientists, physicians, nurses and allied health-professionals.
The mission of the Program is to provide students with an optimal learning environment and multidisciplinary education. The Program utilizes curricula, training and research opportunities to contribute in academia, research centers, healthcare industry and society with their profound analytical and design capabilities.
Recognition of Biomedical Engineering Program with Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC)
Bachelor of Engineering (B. E.) in Biomedical engineering was launched after a successful PEC Zero Visit ref: PEC/AD/SHU-K-BIO-MEDICAL/Zero/2017 dated August 04, 2017 granting permission to launch the program. Student induction started in the year 2017, followed by successful Interim Visit ref: PEC/EAD/SHU-K/BIOMED/RL-2019 dated July 16, 2019 by the Pakistan engineering council.
Transformation into Outcome Based Education (OBE) System
Department of Biomedical Engineering has implemented outcome based education (OBE) system as per PEC requirement with well-defined Program Education Objectives (PEOs) and Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs).
Program Education Objectives (PEOs):
PEOs are designed in accordance with the vision and mission of the department exhibiting the accomplishments that the graduates are expected to accomplish. It serves an important function in designing the curriculum, PLOs and subsequently CLOs.
Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):
In B. E. BME program, twelve (12) PLOs have been adopted from the graduate attributes for engineers defined in the PEC OBA manual, 2019. The following are the twelve PLOs adapted for the program:
